Ward by Ward: Bush Fair: Are things looking rosy for Labour or is it all about the Dan?

Elections / Thu 23rd Apr 2026 at 10:12am

TWENTY years ago, this ward had three Lib Dem councillors. In many ways, they were what local residents are asking for. Hard working, a link between the residents and the powers-that-be. They were also vocal and visible.

Since then there have been Labour, UKIP and Conservative councillors for this ward.

In 2014, UKIP gained the seat and the winning candidate was Dan Long. In 2026, Mr Long returns as a Reform UK candidate.

Mr Long was one of those councillors who may have not had a total grip on what was going on in the chamber but he worked hard in the ward. Our filmed interviews back then attest to that. Potholes on Tumbler Road, anti-social behaviour in Hookfield, housing issues in Spencers Croft.

And in many ways, Mr Long seems to enjoy politics.

Of course, the big factor in this ward and every ward is The Dan Swords Factor.

It feels like a referendum on the leader of the council. It feels like a vote of confidence on his plans to “Build Harlow’s Future”. Councillor Swords isn’t even standing but that is the way he has “marketed” this election.

Fact is, we know very little about the Conservative candidate for this ward. It almost feels like they have put up a paper candidate for a winnable ward.

But even in 2024, they were polling at 32%.

Labour have a candidate in this ward that may be one to watch for the future. We enjoyed interviewing Rosie Jackson. Harlow born and bred. A St Mark’s student who is here for the long haul. This is a really difficult year for any Labour candidate but we need more young people to stand in local elections.

Harlow’s Green Party candidate Dave Margetts is another strong candidate. Very much a community man and is a valuable member of Team Green. It will be interesting to see how many votes they poll.

This is a real tricky one. This could be the real test of whether there are enough voters of all descriptions who will vote for Dan Swords, getting the job done.

Conservative Gain.

YH is right. This is almost a referendum on the future of Harlow. Only Dan Swords local Conservatives offer both hope and vision.

As someone who has lived in Harlow for a while. I cannot stress to anyone new how bad Labour used to be for the town. We all need to vote our local Tory candidate to finally finish the regeneration of Harlow once and for all!

Life doesn't stop with the Tories losing control of Harlow Council. Dan Swords has done a grand job of predicting famine and pestilence if he can't continue with an overall majority. That's nonsense of course, at least for those who can envisage different parties collaborating on key issues at county and district if needs be. Unfortunately, Dan's 'You're either with us or against us' style of campaigning tells us something about his leadership style.

I am sure Chris Vince would have been just as forgiving of Boris Johnson if he had said Partygate was wrong and he apologised. All forgiven. 🤣🤣 Chris Vince like his boss Starmer has no judgement.

Let's get the local Conservatives to finish the job. Harlow deserves it after so much neglect.

Is Dan Swords on the ballot paper in this Ward? No. I am sure he jumped out of this Ward in 2024.

Scott Hegely. You are wrong. Your Reform post of yesterday shows clearly that you and your party are in abject ignorance of what takes to run a local administration. Your plans are nothing new and you add no value. As the saying goes: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Dan Swords and his team deserve to finish the task. Harlow also deserves it.

I think YH prediction is right. I live in Bush Fair and everyone I talk to around here is praising and supporting the local Conservatives of Dan Swords. To be honest, I have never seen such interest in a local election.

Reform for me👍

Today I received three different Reform leaflets simultaneously. If they can't even stagger their leafleting properly how are they going to run a council with a major regeneration programme like Harlow's. They are useless. Still the recycling targets will improve!

Mr T, so you don't want the regeneration of Harlow to continue? How odd.

Scott Taylor you are talking out of your rear. Did you not see the Budget, which was voted for by the Reform councillor and has been signed off the the Council Finance Head Officer. All funding for the regeneration and other investments is in place . Posting nonsense like this does tend to suggest you are a bit of a moron.

Scott Taylor , a bit of a moron? A complete plank!

Some of us haven't forgotten Dan Long's incoherent ramblings in the council chamber and that's before he entered the Spoons. Plus, we haven't forgotten Long inviting into his home and signing the nomination papers of lifelong far-right activist of NF and BNP infamy Eddy Butler. This gives away the true meaning of why Long routinely wears a black shirt, as an Oswald Mosley tribute act. https://www.yourharlow.com/2015/04/16/english-democrat-candidate-thanks-ukip-for-signing-nomination/

David Forman is observant albeit very constrained. According to what I have heard, and much no assertions or judgments, the Harlow Reform candidates appear to represent a fascinating mixed bag of colourful characters: eccentrics, verging on the bounds of harmless lunacy, an exhibitionist keen on acquainting female work colleagues with photos of his private parts, another, their local leader, living out of town trying to claim he is in fact local; one who has a predilection for viewing porn on his work computer and others who are no doubt paragons of civic virtue . Yes, they would bring a new approach to the council's administration. Yes, it might be entertaining to a dispassionate bystander with a warped sense of humour, but is this what Harlow needs to continue with and complete the regeneration? Call me conventional, but think possibly not. On reflection, perhaps we might do better staying Dan Swords and his team.

Born and bred in Harlow and lived most of my life in the Bush Fair area. The ward has generally gone with the mood towards the the national feeling at that time. When Dan Swords got his foot in the door for the first time as a councillor in the Bush Fair ward after being parachuted in off the back of being Robert Halfons tea boy in parliament he didn't have to do much because the Labour Party had become so unpopular at the time. Likewise by the time the next local election came around the mood had swung the other way and he got himself moved to a safer Tory ward in the town having done very little for the Bush Fair area. Likewise the Labour councillors have done very little since. The two traditional parties were basically the only choices at those times but now people have other options and if they still vote for them they must be mad. Dan Swords is just a career politician not actually from Harlow just using it as a springboard before he hopes to move up the conservative ladder. If hadn't of joined in with Labour by cancelling elections previously he would have been voted out by now. Time to punish the Tories and Labour for denying people their democratic rights, time for a change, time for Reform!

Jim, you clearly don't know Dan Swords and sound as if you are very intellectually challenged. Your arguments lack substantiating evidence essential to establish a modicum of credibility. Did your education progress beyond Junior school? If so, I would be astounded.

Jim, ' Vote For Reform'???? You are not serious! A bunch of misfits with no clear plans for Harlow and, by their own admission, completely clueless as to how a local council works. Do you expect anyone with IQ superior to that of a grilled shrimp to jeopardise the entire regeneration of Harlow for Reform rank amateurs?? You need to reflect more, old chap!!!

Yvonne, always so quick to condemn views not aligned with your own in the most unnecessarily insulting terms, as you did to Scott Taylor above. Yet it is Scott Taylor who is right and you who are wrong: the bus terminus upgrade it turns out is now delayed by a whole year. The wheels are just starting to come off of Cllr Dan Swords' frankly insane 'let's do everything all at once' gamble as we In Reform have predicting. His is not the way to run anything, let alone a public body entrusted with precious public funds.
