Leading Harlow Conservative responds to King’s speech

News / Thu 14th May 2026 at 06:08am

OLD Harlow councillor Joel Charles has responded to the King’s Speech setting out the Government’s legislative plans for the year ahead:

Cllr Charles said: “Given the growing chaos in Government, it seems highly unlikely that the Prime Minister will be able to deliver what was set out. It is a redundant legislative platform put together by an already exhausted Government.

Higher welfare spending, no plan for growth and a green energy plan that will add to the cost of living. Instead of focusing on how best to deliver for the country, many members of the Labour Parliamentary Party are focused inward as a leadership contest seems increasingly inevitable.

“The Conservative Party has published an alternative King’s Speech that focuses on the issues that matter most to Harlow residents. A plan to deliver cheaper energy, stimulate economic growth, keep our streets safe with more police officers, increase defence spending and stop the border crisis.

“It is clear that the Labour Party is unable to handle the complex responsibilities of Government. No Minister is ready to tackle the difficult decisions. It is time to deliver – only the Conservative Party will do so in Government.”

I really hate this " It is time to deliver – only the Conservative Party will do so in Government" statement. What is it the kids call it, gaslighting? 14 years in government and they failed to improve anything - had the opposite of the Midas touch, they destroyed everything while wracking up record debt. As much as Labour are mucking up, they were left with a massive mess.

David, that is simple we drill in the north sea, stop the insane taxes on energy and the green levy. At the same same we go massive for nuclear and ditch the poor windmills and solar panels which have limited use. its not hard it just needs leadership to move on past the climate scam. We can then start jailing those like Miliband and other politicians who were stupid enough to go for net zero including the conservatives who brought it in. There has never been a climate emergancy it has all been about damaging the west.

I don't know what's going on with this website, but my innocuous comment has been removed as evidenced by Adam's comment.

Adam, over 50% of our electricity has come from renewables. Hardly 'limited use' as you put it is it? Dear god.

Mr George, yes up to 50% and they include nuclear in that, the issue is two fold when the sun does not shine or wind does not blow (or blows too much) solar and wind are not suitable. They are also horrible to manufacture and have limited lives and are not renewable, wind farm blades are burred to decompose over centuries. The issue with renewable / green energy is there are too many people pushing dodgy schemes to make themselves rich. Want to be truly green, then nuclear and make do and mend for most things not new manufacturing and markets but that is not what the people in control want. it is all about new markets money and of course control for the greater good.

Lol, dodgy schemes to make themselves rich. Do you know your beloved oil industry at all?!! One of the most corrupt industries on the planet, let alone partially responsible for some wars. And yet, over 50% of our electricity (52%) came from wind (both on and offshore), solar, biomass and hydro power. Not nuclear. Nuclear is not classed as renewable.

You must be delusional "It is time to deliver – only the Conservative Party will do so in Government" SO WHERE IS THE NEW HOSPITAL? 2019 the Conservative Party stated that we would get a new hospital to cope with another 100,000 people in the Harlow area. In fact, the Conservative Party stated:"Thursday 25th May 2023, the Conservative government promised to build a new Hospital, this time by 2030, “a fully-funded” new Hospital with construction to start in 2025". The problem is that the Conservative Party did not even buy the land! Let alone build anything! Yes, it is time to deliver, deliver Mr Joel Charles to a rest home for the delusional, as you have lost your marbles.
