NORTH Weald Airfield said goodbye to a historic B-17 WW2 bomber as it headed home on Friday 4 September 2015 after a short unexpected stay at the airfield.

B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B departs from North Weald

The B-17 American Flying Fortress known as ‘Sally B’ was staying at North Weald after being diverted from its journey home last week due to bad weather.

‘Sally B’ is the last remaining airworthy B-17 in Europe. She was built in 1945 and is based at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford where she can be seen on static display. Sally B is kept flying thanks to charitable donations, sponsorship, sales of souvenirs, and the loyal support of her working team of volunteers and 8,000 Sally B Supporters Club Members.
