Shiver me timbers! There be pirates down School Lane

SHIVERpirates me timbers! These little treasures were relieved to not have to walk the plank during their theme day.

The pupils at Freshwaters Primary Academy, in School Lane, Harlow, dressed the part for their pirate day.

Fun activities during the day included making pirate dummies, learning the language of semaphore flags, a treasure hunt and using co-ordinates on maps. The theme also followed throughout drama, music, art and food in the school and nursery.

A class of Year 6 pupils acted as reporters for the day, recording the activities and producing the school’s very first newspaper.

Headteacher Michelle Hughes said: “We like to hold at least one themed event each term. It really helps to spark the children’s imagination and to give their lessons purpose. When they come into school in fancy dress, they also open up more and grow in confidence. They are excited about what they are going to learn next on days like this.

“It also gives them a chance to be children and to have fun while they are learning.”

The day was followed up with work to produce a presentation to be given at parents evening.
