ESSEX County Council announced in today’s budget a £1m School Improvement Fund to give children the best start in life by raising standards and leadership in primary schools.

The Schools Improvement Fund will support school leadership in primary schools through the establishment of the Essex Primary Leadership Academy which will celebrate success, attract the best new talent to Essex, nurture and support the best teachers in the county to become great primary leaders.

In addition the School Improvement Fund will look to create local approaches to improving schools following on from the launch of the Basildon Excellence Panel.

Essex County Councillor Ray Gooding, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “The announcement of the £1m School Improvement Fund is great news for schools, teachers, pupils and parents in Essex. The fund shows ECC’s commitment to ensuring that children have the best start in life and attend a school rated good or outstanding.

“Over the last year significant improvements have been made, with the proportion of primary schools in Essex being judged good or outstanding increasing from 62% to 70%. The Schools Improvement Fund allows us to continue making the improvements needed to increase the educational outcomes of young people across the county.

“The detail of the fund is still being developed, however it is important to me to involve the school community and parents in creating this improvement plan. Over the last few years the schools community have worked hard to make positive changes and so I am keen to hear from them ideas they have and examples of best practice.

“I believe the School Improvement Fund will result in everyone in the county being proud of our schools. Parents, pupils and teachers should be really pleased with today’s news and confident of ECC’s commitment to creating a high performing, enviable and exciting education system.”

Schools, borough and district councils alongside Essex residents are asked to send in their views or any ideas they have to [email protected].
