GOVERNMENT watchdog, Ofsted has said that the Rainbow Day Nursery based in Princess Alexandra Hospital is still good.

The last inspection rated the nursery as outstanding but although it has slipped down a grade, it is still highly recommended.

The report states:

1. Children’s progress in all areas of learning is promoted by staff who provide a good variety of interesting and stimulating activities, indoors and outside.

2. Staff make very clear their expectations for children’s behaviour, which means that children behave well and respond positively to others.

3. Staff work well with parents and take time to get to know each child as an individual. This means that children settle well, are secure and develop good relationships with their key person and other staff.

It made the following criticisms

1. Staff do not always make use of opportunities to encourage older children to develop their mathematical understanding as they play. As a result, children’s ability to count and describe and compare shapes is not promoted to the maximum.

2. Opportunities outdoors to develop in all areas of learning are not fully explored, particularly for older children.
