Harlow Town 3 v 2 VCD Athletic

By Mark Sweeney

AN ALEX Read winner five minutes from time saw Harlow Town beat league leaders VCD Athletic 3-2 at the Harlow Arena.

This was the warmest day of the year so far but there was a swirling wind that was making conditions difficult.

Harlow looked sharp and won the first corner of the game in fifth minute after fine work by Junior Dadson on the left.

The corner flew over and Junior Dadson with his back to goal and two yards out slotted it home.

The lead did not last as Karl Dent tapped home after a James Duckworth shot was spilled by Danny Knowles.

VCD’s one touch football was impressive and they looked like promotion material. At the other end, Shane Stamp was giving the VCD defence a torrid time with his pace.

This was an open game with both teams playing positive football.

VCD were walking through the Harlow midfield at times and could have made it 2-1 when a James Duckworth shot flew across the goal.

They did in the 29th minute when Peter Smith took a speculative shot from thirty yards. It looked like keeper Danny Knowles didn’t see it as he let it curl around him and into the net.

Harlow were now under severe examination but were still ploughing a furrow down the flanks.

Frustration got the better of Harlow as Darren Blewitt’s tackle on A VCD player saw him go into the book.

Harlow were dominating the game, peppering the VCD goal but just not getting the rub of the green.

At the other end, Harlow had to put in some desperate last gasp tackling to avoid going in 3-1 down. Those tackles could have defined their season.

Harlow came out, wind behind them and wind in their sails. In the 47th minute, Alex Read had a punchy shot well saved by Nick Blue.

In the 51st minute, Alex Read equalised with what was a beautiful move with Junior Dadson threading through a great pass that was then passed across the area before Alex Read bundled the ball into the net.

In the 54th minute, Donny Barnard conceded a free kick on the edge of the area. He was booked for his troubles.

VCD were going for the winner. Danny Knowles did well to turn away a deflected shot whilst at the other end a goalmouth melee nearly saw a third for the Hawks.

With another two bookings, the referee had words with the skippers to keep things calm.

The game could have gone either way. Shane Stamp produced a fine run into the area, his shot was well saved and Harlow just couldn’t follow through.

The three points were secured in the 86th minute when a neat free kick by James Smith floated through to the area and Alex Read headed it in for his 43rd goal of the season.

Harlow held out for the remainder of the game, Read nearly equalled the Jeff Wood record of 44 in a season but it was enough to keep the Hawks in the title hunt.
