Students celebrated at Harlow College awards

Education: Secondary / Wed 9th Jul 2014 at 11:50am

ON Thursday 3rd July Harlow College held a Student Celebration Awards, with former student and Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Micky Demoulin as celebrity special guest.

The event was held to celebrate the achievements and talents of the college’s successful students. It was a wonderful evening and one in which the students played key roles in all aspects of the event, including organisation, presentation, catering and technical support.

The show kicked off with a performance by Micky Demoulin, who wowed the packed audience with some of the songs that recently took him to the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent.

Hosts for the evening were Level 3 Performing Arts students Niall Gray and Brooke Clark, both of whom did a fantastic job of compering the proceedings and entertaining the crowd with their witty repartee and slick professionalism.

All the young people receiving awards were nominated by their tutors for outstanding achievement, both academically and in terms of their commitment and drive to overcome adversity. Their personal journeys are truly inspirational and a welcome antidote to the negative image often presented of young people.

The awards were sponsored by local employers, who continue to support the College with their generosity. Unfortunately, some people were unable to attend due to being trapped in traffic chaos on the M11 caused by a glue spillage – literally stuck in traffic!

Harlow College Principal Karen Spencer said of the event: “The students who received awards are a shining example of what we strive for with all of our learners. Their hard work, commitment and enthusiasm is inspirational and we are extremely proud to honour their achievements at these awards.”

Micky Demoulin said of the evening: “It was a pleasure performing at the college’s GlassBox Theatre and I was impressed at how the college has grown. From the lights and sound technicians to the dancers who also performed on the night, it really shows that Harlow College has a lot of talented students.”

Paul Taylor, Chair of Governors at Harlow College who opened the event, was equally enthusiastic: “A fantastic evening celebrating everything that Harlow College represents and all the awards were greatly deserved. I am proud that Harlow College provides such an opportunity for all our learners to achieve their potential and this was clearly evidenced throughout the evening. Each of the winners will undoubtedly go on to be a success in the next phase of their life whether that be in education or in the workplace.”
