Harlow Town 3 v 1 Romford

HARLOW Town continued their perfect start to the season as they overwhelmed a stubborn Romford 3-1 at the Harlow Arena.

Harlow stretched their legs in the 3rd minute when skipper James Smith ran half the length of the pitch but his one-two in the area left him offside.

Romford looked calm and composed and were enjoying the smooth 3G surface.

Alex Read should have scored in the 7th minute but he spooned the ball over the bar from close range.

Harlow broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Shane Stamp’s looping header went over the keeper’s head and into the net.

But it didn’t last long as Romford’s Tom Richardson found space on the left of the area to slam the ball past the Hawk’s keeper Ed Thompson.

Romford started to take a marginal hold on the game. In the 30th minute, Josh Urquhart received a yellow card for a clumsy challenge as Harlow found it hard to get into their stride.

The heavens opened but the player who seemed to be enjoying the conditions the most was Romford winger Tom Richardson, who Harlow were giving far too much space to.

Harlow’s football continued to be pretty but the final ball was missing.

Every season, you have to admire Romford. A zero budget but 100% commitment.

Harlow came out for the second half looking much sharper and early chances for Layne Eadie and Shane Stamp signalled their intent.

In the 60th minute, Romford attacker, Abs Seymour had a great chance to score when he weaved his way past the static Harlow defence but his shot was well blocked by Thompson.

With Jared Small and George Smith coming on to bolster the attack, the Hawks stepped up a gear. Inn the 71st minute, Jared Small hit the bar from close range. This sustained period of pressure was the defining moment in the game.

In the 68th minute, Harlow went in front again when Alex Read, using his great instincts produced a curling, looping header that beat the keeper.

The game was put beyond doubt in the 76th minute when Alex Read picked up the ball on the right of the box and as clam as you like unleashed a right footed shot that lashed the back of the net.
