Scores on the doorsANOTHER fast food takeaway in the town has been closed by Harlow Council following an infestation of cockroaches.

Harlow Council served a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition notice on Moriam Indian Take Away and Uptown Pizza who shared premises at 7 Cecil Court, Pegrams Road, CM18 7QR on 3 December 2014, forcing the premises to close. On Tuesday (9 December 2014) Chelmsford Magistrates Court agreed that the Council was right to close the premises.

The closure followed a routine food hygiene inspection by the Council’s Environmental Health Team on 3 December 2014 which found:

There was an active cockroach infestation noted in all areas of the premises. Live cockroaches were seen on food, on food equipment and in food preparation areas.

The premises and equipment were dirty and greasy.

There was a lack of documented food safety procedures.

The business was closed immediately by Environmental Health Officers and served with a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice. It has since reopened following extensive cleaning and pest control measures. Follow up checks have been made by Council Officers.

Councillor Mark Wilkinson, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “This is not action we take lightly but the active cockroach infestation including live cockroaches on food meant we had to act to close the premises due to the risk posed to the public. The premises has since reopened and carried out extensive cleaning and take pest control measures including working with Council Officers to reach compliance.

“This is the second formal closure of a takeaway premises in the town in the last two months due to an infestation of cockroaches. It is still very rare to find cockroaches in food premises in Harlow. It is important to remember that 91 percent of the town’s food premises having a food hygiene rating of 3 or better.”

In November Harlow Council gained an Emergency Prohibition Order against the Mirch Masala Express at Unit 1 Mill Court, Edinburgh Gate, CM20 2JA following a routine food hygiene inspection. These premises remains closed.
