UKIP Harlow has paid tribute to cllr Jerry Crawford who has been forced to stand down due to ill health.

A spokesperson for UKIP said: “It is with much regret and sadness that we announce the resignation from Harlow Council of Mark Hall UKIP Councillor Jerry Crawford.

“Jerry is sadly suffering from poor health, and being the selfless honourable man he is, he has chosen to step down to allow Mark Hall to elect someone better able to serve them at this time.

UKIP Group Leader Bill Pryor said; “It is very sad to be losing a key UKIP member, and an honourable, hard working man of integrity such as Jerry so early in his term. We had hoped that a short period of medical leave would have been the right way to go. But Jerry feels it was not in the best interests of his residents in Mark Hall – and would go against the UKIP principles of public service before self and party – and has therefore taken this very principled decision. We will miss him, and so will his residents in Mark Hall – and we hope he’s back in the Chamber with us before too long.”

By the time of writing, a letter calling for a By Election will be logged with Malcolm Morley, Chief Executive and Returning Officer of Harlow District Council. We understand this means the By Election will likely be in early February.

The UKIP Candidate for the By Election is Mark Hall Resident, Mark Gough.

Mark is a former two term Conservative Councillor on Harlow Council, having represented Kingsmoor (2000-2), Sumners & Kingsmoor (2002-4), and most recently Netteswell (2008-12). Mark has lived in Glebelands in the Mark Hall Ward for 42 years.

Mark is the Political Secretary of Harlow UKIP, and believes politics is about helping others and public service – and is upset so many in the three mainstream parties seem to have forgotten that.

Mark said: “It is very sad to be losing Jerry, who has proven to be an exceptional Councillor in a very short time. Whilst I am naturally delighted to be selected as the UKIP Candidate for the By Election in my home ward – whether I am successful or not, I will not let anyone forget that this is Jerry’s term, and he earnt it!”
