Nishall’s Blog: Do you believe 16 year old should be able to vote in General Elections?

SO it is 2015, and this year we have a General Election in May, so I thought as it is election year, I will talk about a election related topic in my first blog of the year. My topic I have choose for this blog is should the voting age be lowered to 16. I decided to choose this topic following BBC 4’s Any Question that was broadcasted live from Harlow College. As my question was choose to be asked but unfortunately there was not enough time to ask it.

I believe 16 year old should be able to vote in General Elections as they are allowed to take other life changing decisions, so if they can take life changing decisions, I am sure they should be able to vote as they are trusted to do mature things.

But the main reason I believe 16 years should get to vote because they deserve to have a say. If they are now in a responsible stage of their life, they deserve a say on who will decide how their country will be run through elections! Also I believe the numbers of young people’s interest in politics is ridiculously low. The way to address this, is to allow younger people the vote, as it would encourage them to investigate further into how it all works. Some may not be interested at all, thats fine. But should we really obstruct the opportunities for those interested in learning more? I think it is important for young people to be interested in politics as will affect them hugely at some point in their lives, therefore we should offer 16s and over the vote.

However I do also say no to lowering the age to 16 but this point I am going to make could be said about any person voting at any age. If the voting age is lowered to 16, there will be some immature young people voting. They’ll vote for what they think is ‘cool’ and may vote for a party or a person, without knowing what they are doing and what their party politics will do to the country for example. An immature 16-year-old may elect an unprepared candidate who gets the young people’s vote with personal qualities and a manipulated and alienated speech.

After BBC 4’s Any Question during the reception, I spoke to Dr Jillian Creasy and Maajid Nawaz who are both prospective parliamentary candidates hoping to win a seat in the General Election, they both that agree that voting should be lowered to the age of 16.

So do you believe 16 year old should be able to vote in General Elections? Tell me what you think by tweeting me @Nishall95 or Facebook me, I am looking forward to hearing your views!
