Athletics: Jim Bates rolls back the years as he breaks Over-70 record

HARLOW Running Club member Jim Bates improved the club 10 mile Vet 70 record by over a minute and a half, which has stood since 1998, during the Fred Hughes 10 Mile race at St Albans. In his debut at the distance, Bates finished in 335th place out of 732 finishers in an excellent 1hr 21min 25sec, leaving lots of younger runners in his wake. He was followed home by Sean Flynn 437th in 1hr 25min 18sec and Andy Kinney 603rd in 1hr 34min 41sec.

Meanwhile at the Folksworth 15 Mile race Jamie Jephcott finished in 62nd place out of 440 finishers in a superb 1hr 44min 23sec.

At the multi-terrain and hily Benfleet 15 Brendon Maclean finished in 211th place out of 577 finishers in a personal best time for the distance (PB) of 2hrs 14min 00sec and he was followed by Holly Nairn 501st in 2hrs 54min 48sec.

At the Harlow Parkrun 5K John Bull finished in 10th place out of 113 finishers in 23min 05sec. He was followed home by Andy Ramage 12th in 23min 42sec, Paul Dixon 15th in 24min 13sec (PB), Robin Lozeau 22nd in 25min 36sec, Terry Pike 32nd in 27min 05sec, Alison Bull 47th in 28min 51sec, Jane Evans 48th in 28min 52sec, Alan Wellbelove 52nd in 29min 17sec, Pushpa Mistry 61st in 31min 04sec and Emily Clibbens 76th in 33min 35sec in her debut at the distance.

At the Gunpowder Parkrun 5K at Waltham Abbey Daniel Jephcott finished in 5th place out of 215 finishers and 2nd U20 in 20min 29sec and Richard Smith was 32nd in 24min 06sec (PB).

At the Panshanger Parkrun 5K at Hertford Sean Flynn finished in 68th place out of 215 finishers in 25min 03sec.
