BURNT Mill’s impressive GCSE results from last summer has seen them appear near the top of the table in one school league listing.

The school, in First Avenue, Harlow, was topped in this year’s league tables only by grammar schools in the list of 115.

The summer’s GCSE results of 82% of students achieving five or more A* to C grades, including English and maths, at Burnt Mill put the outstanding comprehensive up there with the county’s best.

The closest Harlow school to Burnt Mill in the list is Stewards Academy in 37th position in the county table, with a figure of 60%.

Headteacher Helena Mills is a firm believer in good comprehensive schools offering as good an education, if not better, than grammar schools and believes this result supports her view.

She said: “This shows that by having complete belief in our children and them working hard, they can achieve anything, no matter what their background.”
