John PettersA VERY special reunion of Harlow’s celebrated John Petters Swing Band takes place on Thursday 26th February at St John’s Arts Centre, St John’s Walk, Market St. Old Harlow, CM17 0AJ.

The concert will see the welcome return of ex pat. clarinet and saxophonist, Pete Neighbour, now resident in the USA and his fellow reedman, Julian Stringle. The two were both in their teens when they joined the band in 1983, where they played at the Playhouse and The Square and have gone on to have spectacular careers. Pete spends his life cruising the world as a celebrity instrumentalist, whilst Julian was recognised by the late Sir John Dankworth as being, “”The best clarinettest to emerge in British jazz for decades”.

Joining the band will be veteran guitarist, Jim Douglas, who shot to international fame with the famous Alex Welsh band. He appeared regularly on radio and television during the ‘60s alongside such American jazz originals as Henry Red Allen. A ‘Jazz 625’ show – an early transmission by BBC2, luckily survives and Jim can be seen creating the perfect rhythm as well as a number highly creative solos. Douglas has recently published a book, Tunes, Tours and Travelitis: Eighteen years with the Alex Welsh Band, which has received very favourable reviews.

Returning to the Yamaha grand piano for the gig will be the ever popular Tim Huskissonwho always delights audiences.

Harlow bassist, Keith Donald will be on hand and the line-up will be completed by the powerhouse percussion of Ex-Harlow drummin’ man and leader, John Petters.

The programme will include swing classics in the Benny Goodman – Gene Krupa style as well as a selection of American songbook classics by Gershwin, Berlin and Porter.

This concert promises to be one of the jazz highlights of the year.
Tickets are just £10.
