1st XV – London League Division Three North East

HARLOW started strongly and took an early lead in a game which according to the form book should have been a close contest. Beccles had taken the points in the away leg and although Harlow have been playing much more strongly in the second half of the season and could hope to reverse the result they came to the game expecting to have to work for it. As it happens a bizarre sequence of disciplinary infringements by Beccles handed Harlow a substantial advantage. However although in the end they won comfortably and scored the 4th try for the bonus point they did not really press home their advantage.

Harlow started well and were quickly into the Beccles half. Within 5 minutes Harlow charged down a Beccles clearance kick and quickly exploited the situation to allow Darren Hawking to run in the try. Fly Half Dan Smith converts for a 7 – 0 lead. A few minutes later from 20 metre scrum Harlow back row breaks blind creating space for winger Will Grimley to score. Again Dan Smith was on target for a 14 – 0 lead. Mid way through the first half the whole game changed when Beccles were penalized with a yellow card for a high tackle. In protest a Beccles player makes contact with the ref and is red carded. With 20minutes to play in the half Beccles are down to 13 men and scrummages are uncontested because they no longer have a competent front row. Instead of taking advantage of the situation Harlow struggle to take hold of the game. Both sides add penalties to the scoresheet. The first half finishes with Harlow ahead by 17 points to 3. Before the end of the game Beccles were to concede two more yellow cards.

Despite their advantage for quite a while in the second half Harlow did not manage to turn it into points. Their advantage was possibly less effective because they had been dominating the set scrums and the imposition of uncontested scrums neutralized this. After 25 minutes a strong attack by Harlow combining forwards and backs saw Will Grimley run in his second try near the corner extending the lead to 22 – 3. With the game drawing to a close Harlow took advantage of the extra man, spinning the ball wide creating space for Kain Calridge to run in the all important 4th try and secure the bonus point; Smith converted. In the final minute of the game Beccles came back and powered their way over for a converted try. The game finished immediately after the kick at 29 -10 to Harlow.
