THE following statement is being issued in response to today’s annual Ofsted report on social care. The report draws on the findings of over 5,600 inspections of social care services and specifically references Essex County Council as a local authority that has improved to being judged as ‘good’ by inspectors.

Essex County Councillor Dick Madden, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “It’s hugely rewarding to be referenced within Ofsted’s report today, and being identified as a local authority that has made significantly improvement in children’s services. Prior to our inspection, we had been on a continuous improvement journey to ensure children in Essex are safe, supported and protected and the rating shows we are on the right path to ensuring our services are ultimately outstanding.

“I’m particularly proud of the work of the senior management team, who have been instrumental in driving the significant improvement in children’s services across the county. I’m also pleased that Ofsted recognised the way we put children and young people at the heart of everything we do, involving them in improving and developing services and making sure their voice is heard.

“As a result of our inspection, we’ve been providing a good deal of support to other authorities, including giving presentations and hosting conferences about inspection preparation. We’ve also been taking part in Peer Reviews and sitting on Intervention Boards – set up by the Department for Education (DfE) to work with authorities that are the subject of Ministerial intervention. We have recently been successful in a DfE tender for providing advice, support and challenge to children’s services departments which have inadequate services. A key part of the bid was the added value that Essex could provide, in the form of a ‘buddy-system’, between leaders in Essex and their opposite numbers in the authorities concerned.”
