Well, are they going to switch the lights on or not?

A DEADLINE given to Essex County Council by Harlow Council over the streetlights has passed.

County Hall had until 5pm today (Friday, March 13) to decide whether to accept money to turn street lights back on in the town.

In January, Harlow Council voted to raise its share of the council tax by 1.5 per cent in order to raise the £100,000 needed to turn the lights back on between the hours of midnight and 5am.

But the switch-on, (which could cost £121,000), has yet to be agreed by Essex County Council.

Harlow Council leader Jon Clempner said: “We were simply asking for a yes or no decision. It’s as simple as that. We have made the money available and we are asking for Councillor Bass, the portfolio holder, to flick a switch and turn the lights back on.”

Councillor Bass has told a paper that he will make a decision in “due course”.
