Museum week to be celebrated in Harlow

MUSEUMS across Essex will be taking part in the international initiative #MuseumWeek celebrating culture on Twitter across the world.

Returning for the second year, #MuseumWeek will launch on 23 March and run for one week until 29 March with the aim of connecting followers to artwork, culture, history and science in short 140 character bursts on twitter.

The county’s Museum Development Office will be tweeting alongside numerous Essex museums including Braintree, Colchester & Ipswich, Harlow and Rayleigh, linking in to daily themes set by Museum Week organisers to encourage twitter users to interact and explore culture.

Tweets from participating museums will be informative, educational and fun. The hashtag themes for each day will vary and will encourage museums to interact by following topics that delve behind the scenes into a bank of little known secrets; to explore the history of their building’s architecture and gardens; and invite top tips for a day out to the museum.

County Councillor Roger Hirst, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Libraries, Planning and the Environment said: “MuseumWeek is an excellent world-wide initiative and it is encouraging to know how many Essex museums are taking part. It offers Twitter followers a unique insight into museums across the county, taking a look behind the scenes whilst promoting the work they do in preserving and exhibiting our culture.”

Essex will be tweeting alongside other participating UK organisations already signed up – including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Stonehenge and the British Museum.
