NHS West Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is encouraging people to self-care where possible and visit their pharmacy for help and advice on addressing minor illnesses such as coughs, headaches and upset stomachs over what is usually a period of high demand.

If you need medical help fast but it’s not an emergency, call 111 for free from mobiles and landlines 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A trained advisor will assess your symptoms and arrange the best next steps for you, including an out-of-hours GP appointment where necessary.

People are also encouraged to check that they have enough medication to last them from Friday 3 April to Monday 6 April and order repeat prescriptions as soon as possible if necessary.

Dr Rob Gerlis, Chair of West Essex CCG said: “Choosing the right healthcare service is as important as ever this Easter weekend.

”NHS 111 remains available for free all day every day for when you need medical help fast but it’s not an emergency. You can also visit a nearby pharmacy for help and advice on managing illnesses at home.

“It’s also important to remember A&E is not and never has been for non-urgent treatment.”

NHS 111 is available in west Essex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. You will be assessed and directed to the most appropriate local service for your needs. NHS 111 can also advise on contacting the GP out-of-hours service which is available Mon-Fri 6pm – 8am and all day Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays. Calls from landlines and mobiles are free.
