Harlow Town 2 v 1 Thamesmead Town

HARLOW TOWN secured three points and set they sights on the play-offs after winning 2-1 against Thamesmead Town at the Harlow Arena.

The bumper crowd had hoped to see Harlow crowned champions but Needham Market beat Chatham to secure the championships.

This was always going to be a difficult game. Thamemead had been on a good run and were probably the type of team you wanted to avoid on the last day of the season, when so much hinged on the result.

Harlow started brightly in cool conditions. An early chance came for Alex Read as he broke free but Junio Dadson just couldn’t latch on to the cross.

The early pressure was all Harlow as they played the ball down the channels.

In the 15th minute, skipper David Cowley sent in a probing cross that Leon Antoine got a head to but the ball flew over the bar.

The Harlow players were really enjoying getting at the Thamesmead defenders.

The Hawks broke the deadlock in the 25th minute after good work by Layne Eadie on the left side saw the ball skid across the box and Alex Read nip the ball in for the first goal.

But on the half hour, with their first real attack, Thamesmead equalised with a fine header from Tyrus Gordon-Young.

With Needham Market scoring at exactly the same time, there was a definite deflated feeling in the Harlow Arena as fans feared that the challenges of the play offs may beckon.

By the time, Harlow Town came out for the second half, they were aware that Needham Market were 3-0 up and heading for promotion.

The game lost its momentum until the 61st minute when Leon Antoine got his head onto a great Alex Read cross to make it 2-1.

The last half hour saw Danny Chapman bring on all his substitutes as he now had one eye on a play off.
