MP Robert Halfon “Conservatives are helping people in Harlow onto the housing ladder”

THE government Right to Buy scheme is now being extended to allow 1.3 million Housing Association tenants to buy their own home at a discount. It has recently been estimated by the National Housing Federation that this will impact almost 15,000 homes in the East of England, with a total discount of over £1 billion.

Responding to the news, Robert Halfon commented:

“Helping more families to buy their own home is a key part of our One Nation policies so that working people in Harlow are able to enjoy security and opportunity.“

“Extending Right to Buy will allow hundreds of lower earners in Harlow the chance to own their own home. I would encourage everyone to visit http://righttobuyharlow.com, where I will be offering free and impartial advice about this government scheme.”

Robert Halfon has also welcomed new figures showing that Help to Buy, the Conservative scheme to help people access an affordable mortgage with a small deposit, has helped over 100 families in Harlow to buy their own home.

Across the country, Help to Buy has now enabled over 100,000 families to buy their own home – an average of 131 new homeowners created every day since the scheme was launched. Over 80 per cent of those helped are first-time buyers and 94 per cent of sales have been outside of London.

Help to Buy is being extended to allow thousands more families to get onto the housing ladder. This is in addition to other measures to help first-time buyers including building 200,000 new Starter Homes reserved exclusively for first-time buyers under 40 and the new Help to Buy ISA that will help people to save a deposit for their first home.

Halfon added:

‘Conservatives believe that everyone who works hard should be able to have a home of their own. But when we came to office, too many people couldn’t afford the huge deposit they needed to get on the housing ladder.’

‘We weren’t prepared to let that continue, which is why we launched Help to Buy so people could get an affordable mortgage with only a 5 per cent deposit. Since this was launched over 100 families have been able to get on the housing ladder here in Harlow.‘
