FOR a seventh year in a row Parndon Wood Nature Reserve has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag, officially recognising it as one of the best kept green spaces in the country.

Parndon Wood Nature Reserve is once again among a record-breaking number of parks and green spaces this year, with 1,582 receiving the national award handed out by environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy.

The Award recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space is well managed to the highest possible standards, beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

The Awards are judged by more than 700 green space experts who volunteer visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.

A Green Flag raising ceremony at Parndon Wood is scheduled to take place on 9 September 2015.

The Nature Reserve is maintained by Harlow Council and volunteers with local organisation ECCO managing the Conservation Centre and running community activities as part of a partnership agreement.

Councillor Mark Wilkinson, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said:

“This is another excellent achievement for Parndon Wood Nature Reserve. It’s great to see all the hard work that Council Officers, volunteers and ECCO put in pay off; to continue meeting such high standards year after year is not easy and this Award recognises their efforts.

“Hundreds of children and families take part in community events at the Reserve organised by ECCO, which play a vital role in improving people’s health and wellbeing in Harlow. This Award recognises and highlights that people in the town continue to benefit from a green open space of the very highest quality.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said:

“We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
