Also launched were the free Fitpark classes which will take place at the outdoor gym; these classes are provided by local business Stanley4Fitness.

Derek Fenny, Trustee, and Carol Sizeland, Chief Executive Officer from Harlow Health Centres Trust, which has provided the funding to make both the gym and the Fitpark classes possible, were both there to officially launch the gym and the sessions. Derek Fenny commented:

“Harlow Health Centres Trust is more than willing to support these projects. The Trust does this as part of its health and wellbeing strategy which is there to help organisations improve the health and wellbeing of Harlow residents.”

The gym is next to the footbridge which goes over the hill from the Greyhound Pub, located on land opposite the top of the old pitch and putt course. It is designed to help improve local residents health and wellbeing and provides more free facilities for all to enjoy in Harlow Town Park.

The Outdoor Gym currently has eight pieces of equipment that enable residents to get a full body workout. The equipment includes a set of triple pull-up bars, a sit-up bench, a step box multi-gym, a chest press/pull down, a swingalong, a set of hurdles, a set of parallel bars and a balance beam. There will also be an additional four pieces of equipment installed on land above the adventure playground in the near future. The new equipment will enable residents to get a cardio workout and will include a bicycle, hand cycle, recumbent cycle and a strength wheel.

Fitpark sessions for everyone are held on Saturday mornings from 8am to 8.45am and women-only sessions held on Wednesday mornings from 9.30am to 10.15am. All levels of fitness are welcome and there will be scaling options to ensure that residents get the right level of workout.

Councillor Emma Toal, Portfolio Holder for Youth & Community, said:

“We are committed to doing what we can by working with other organisations to help improve people’s health and wellbeing at little or at no cost. Since it opened in April the outdoor gym has proved to be a very popular facility. We want to encourage even more people to take advantage of it and hope that the free Fitpark sessions will help people build up their fitness and give them confidence to exercise, so that they get the most out of the free gym facility.”

Following the Saturday morning Fitpark session, anyone still wanting more can join in Harlow parkrun the free 5km timed run around Harlow Town Park. You can register for this at www.parkrun.org.uk/harlow

The Council has also launched a free, fortnightly Health Walks programme within the Town Park which are held on a Saturday. Details can be found at www.harlow.gov.uk/events
