HARLOW Penguins East Region Champion, Karl Batorski returned to competing at the highest national level after a ten-year absence in the British Swimming Championships at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Pool.

Batorski, 27, qualified for the event as one of the fastest 24 swimmers in the UK in the men’s 100m butterfly.

Having qualified 19th, his target was to qualify for the final and swimming in the final heat.

Penguins club spokesman Martin Stringer explained: “He knew that he had to be at the top of his game to achieve that.

“In the race, Karl set the pace from the start and turned at the 50m mark in 25.24 seconds.

“Maintaining his stroke down the second length, Karl finished in fourth place in a new personal best time of 54.96 seconds, an improvement of nearly half a second on the time he set in winning the East Region Championships.

“A quick look at the scoreboard confirmed Karl had finished ninth overall in the heats and qualified for the evening final.”

In the final, Batorski was competing against swimmers from the ASA’s ITCs (Intensive Training Centres) at Loughborough and Bath universities, or the some of the big city clubs such as Sheffield or Plymouth.

“The training facilities they have available to them compared to those at Harlow Penguins are in a different league,” said Stringer.

Undeterred, Batorski put in another outstanding performance, challenging all the way, finishing tenth and was cheered by swimmers in the club’s junior squads who were allowed time out of training at Leisurezone to watch the event on the poolside.

“The effect on Harlow Penguins swimmers watching Karl’s swims was truly inspiring. There are swimmers now actively looking to follow in his footsteps and compete at this level, he has shown the swimmers what it takes to compete at this level and he will take an active part in their development in the coming year.

“An amazing result for Karl and an inspiring performance for the club’s swimmers to follow.”
