Harlow fitness group “Go Nuts” to support dementia patients

The Nuts Challenge is an Assault Course with a difference – mud, obstacles and fun across a course of between 7k and 28k. It will be held in Dorking on Saturday 5 September. Kate and Gary have pulled together a team of 60 people to take part in this event and raise funds to purchase some My Life Software packages for people with dementia and neurological conditions. The software aims to ‘spark’ recollections that can stimulate conversations between the patient and their nursing staff or family members. Ultimately, it can improve a patient’s wellbeing and help provide a more personalised package of care.
Princess Alexandra Hospital’s Charity – the charity which supports patients, staff and visitors to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow – is fundraising to purchase as many of the software packages as they can to support patients across the hospital. Kate first learnt about the Charity’s appeal when she read about it in the Harlow Star in May.
Kate said: ‘My Dad recently had a stroke and now has early onset Alzheimer’s which affects him on a daily basis. I know it helps him enormously to talk about the past and things that are familiar to him. I saw the article in the Harlow Star about The Princess Alexandra Hospital’s Charity fundraising to purchase this equipment and it really resonated with me. Stanley4Fitness is a Community Interest Company and so we aim to work with the local community – and this is a great way of doing it. We hope lots of people will support us, by joining the team or sponsoring us, to purchase one of these dementia software packages’.
Pam Cramer, one of the Dementia Champions at Princess Alexandra Hospital said: ‘We are delighted to have the support of Kate, Gary and everyone at Stanley4Fitness. The My Life Software is making a real difference to people with dementia in hospitals across the UK and we’d like Princess Alexandra Hospital to be one of them. We are implementing a number of small changes across the hospital to support patients with dementia, but this software would help them enormously’.
