History / Wed 9th Sep 2015 at 03:07pm

THE Chairman of Essex County Council has written to HM the Queen to congratulate Her Majesty on becoming the longest-reigning monarch in British sovereign history.

Around 5.30pm today (September 9) Queen Elizabeth II will have reigned longer than her great great grandmother, Queen Victoria, who was on the throne for 63 years and 216 days.

To mark the milestone, Cllr Norman Hume, Chairman of Essex County Council, has written on behalf of the people of Essex to offer congratulations for her devoted service to the nation.

Cllr Hume said: “Over the decades her Majesty has seen great social and political change throughout the United Kingdom, but throughout her reign has continued to play a central role with a continued emphasis on duty and service.

“Today’s milestone is a wonderful achievement, and I think it is fitting that we should take this opportunity to acknowledge and give our gratitude for the example she sets.”
