TEN young athletes from Harlow AC made the long trip to Newcastle to compete in the junior road races as part of the Great City Games at the Great North Run on Saturday 12th September 2015.

The junior road races are held on the quayside in the centre on Newcastle on the 12th Sept, the day the before the 13.1 mile Great North Run on Sun 13th Sept and it was a great opportunity for our youngsters to mingle with international athletes and go head-to-head with the best young distance runners in the north. There were over 7,000 youngsters competing in the races.

Pride of pace went to 8 year old Jemima Pratt who won the U9’s 1.5K road race in a blistering time of 5.18 breaking the Newcastle course record and beating all the boys in her age group in the process. Jemima competed against over 1000 other young runners in her race and posted the fasted time in the 31 year history of the event. She was actually interviewed at the start of the race which was later shown on BBC 1 on Sunday 13th Sept during live coverage of the Great North Run. As a club we’ve had Great Run Series winners and podium places several times in the past but this is the first time we’ve had a winner at the Great North Run which is incredible for us as a club and for Jemima!!

Maddie Bailey had a strong run to finish in 32nd place in the U11 2.5K road race in a time of 19.05.

In the U13 girls 2.5K race, Charlotte Pratt was a fantastic 4th place in a time of 16.13. Charlotte fell over in the mass stampede start and bravely battled back from 30th place to take a superb 4th place!! Savanna Sirkett was 15th in a time of 16.40 and Ellen Savidge was 50th in a time of 18.52.

Zoe Rutter ran in the U15 girls 2.5K and finished in a very credible 8th place in a fast time of 16.05.

Ben Savidge ran in the U11 boys 2.5K to finish 121st in a time of 19.25.

Kai Boggon had a good run to place in 24th on the u13 boys 2.5K in a credible time of 15.24.

The Harknett twins, Lewis and Owen were once again in stunning form in the U15 boys 2.5K race. Lewis claimed a podium place with 2nd in a fast time of 13.47 with Owen had a great run stepping up in distance to finish in a superb 5th place in a time of 14.30.

The Harlow AC athletes travelled a long way to Newcastle and to come back with a winner, a 2nd, a 4th, 5th, 8th and a string of high placing finishers is great for them them. All our athletes ran well against very large fields up there.

At the event our youngsters were lucky enough to meet and have photo’s taken with international athletes such Mo Farah (their hero!), Jo Pavey, Richard Kilty, Johnny Peacock and former hurdling supremo Colin Jackson among others.
