Sarah KaoSARAH, a Year 11 student at Sir Charles Kao UTC has been nominated for the ‘WISE’ Girl Award, recognising her achievement in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Sarah, who joined the UTC as part of it’s first cohort in September 2014, is part of a shortlist of three candidates and the youngest of all nominees in this year’s awards.

The annual WISE Awards celebrate the work of individuals and organisations who are leading the way for women in STEM. The Girl Award recognises the achievements of girls under 18, who serve as an inspiration for other young women who would like to get involved in the STEM field. Record numbers of entries were received from women and organisations working in the UK’s STEM sector.

Sarah was nominated for her hard work in Maths as one of only two students at the UTC to take their GCSE Maths exams a year early, achieving an A grade. She has aspirations to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA and would like to be a game designer in the future.

At the UTC, which specialises in Medical Technology and Smart Environments, Sarah has been a key role model to other students and is always keen to assist others with her learning. She is also currently collecting for Get Well Gamers UK, a charity which gives unwanted games consoles and laptops to young people in hospitals.

The winner of the award will be announced at a ceremony on November 12th, where Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal in her role as a Royal Patron of the WISE campaign will present the awards.

WISE Director Helen Wollaston said:

“I was blown away by the passion, energy, commitment and sheer dogged determination of the girls and women we met yesterday. They are shining examples of talent which is changing the face of the UK’s science, technology and engineering industries, to keep us at the forefront of global innovation and make the world a better place”.

Principal Michael McKeaveney said:

“I am incredibly proud of Sarah and all of her achievements with us at the UTC. She is one of our best and brightest and she has an incredible future ahead of her. “

Mathematics Teacher Justin Hatt said:

“Sarah has excelled in all of her lessons in mathematics. She is a very hard working student who answers all questions with great detail and explanation. She is very helpful to her classmates by assisting them with their work when possible. I am really proud and excited that she has been nominated for this award because it shows her accomplishment and dedication to mathematics and all other STEM subjects”
