Harlow athletes and organisations make shortlist for Active Essex Awards

FINALISTS have been announced for the Active Essex Sports Awards 2015. These awards celebrate the talent, commitment and determination in sport and physical activity across the county.

The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in Colchester on Tuesday 2 December 2014 and broad cast live on BBC Essex from 7pm.

Essex County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for Sport and Physical Activity, Councillor Ray Gooding said: “The Active Essex Sports Awards are a great platform to promote community sport and physical activity in Essex, illustrated by our inspirational finalists who were selected from hundreds of outstanding nominations. This year we received more nominations than ever before which demonstrates the commitment and passion for sport in Essex.”

Gary Sullivan OBE, Chairman of Active Essex, said: “We are looking forward to celebrating outstanding contributions to sport and physical activity in Greater Essex represented by some of the most talented and dedicated sports people in the county. It is their passion and effort that keeps Essex at the top of the sporting charts; they are the local heroes inspiring the next generation.”

The awards will be presented at Colchester United Community Stadium and broadcast live on BBC Essex Radio from 7pm.

Active Essex is pleased to announce the finalists for 2015:

School or college of the Year, sponsored Creative Sport and Leisure

Criteria: A school, college, university or early years setting that gives its pupils a wide range of opportunities to participate in high quality physical education and extra curriculum sport. The institution should show a continued commitment to club links.

Finalists: Friars Primary School and Nursery (Southend-on-Sea), Beckers Green Primary School (Braintree), Lee Chapel Primary School (Basildon)

Active Workplace of the year, sponsored Life Chiropractic

Criteria: An organisation, business or workplace that has made a significant contribution to developing and promoting sport and physical activity. This could be an organisation that has provided a significant number of competitions or has engaged a significant number of employees who are regularly logging their activities on Workplace Challenge.

Finalists: Visteon Engineering Service (Chelmsford), Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust (Chelmsford), Provide Maldon (Maldon).

Coach of the Year, sponsored by Everyone Active

Criteria: A coach who holds a current recognised coaching qualification (all short listed nominations will be verified by the appropriate National Governing Body). This should be someone who is committed to providing the highest standard of coaching to their athletes and / or to helping other coaches to develop.

Finalists: Julie Belemore (Chemlsford Gymnastic Club, Chelmsford) Madeline Smith (Southend Sapphires Netball Team, Southend), Ozel Osman (Okami Martial Arts, Southend-on-Sea).

Young Volunteer, sponsored by Holiday Inn, Basildon

Criteria: A young volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to local sport. This could be a dedicated volunteer within a sports club setting who you feel deserves recognition for their commitment to supporting and developing the club and its members.

Finalists: Jazz Smith (Thurrock), Lewis Brennan (Braintree), Niall Pollinger (Chelmsford).

Community Club of the Year, sponsored by Wilson James

Criteria: A local club that has significantly developed and/or performed well in the last year at district, county, regional and international level. The club must hold ClubMark or equivalent NGB accreditation.

Finalists: Colchester Rugby Club (Colchester), Chelmsford Athletics Club (Chelmsford), Braintree BMX Club (Braintree).

Physical Activity Project of the Year, sponsored by Fusion Lifestyle

Criteria: An individual, team, club, group or organisation who has successfully delivered a physical activity project in Greater Essex which has made a significant contribution to increasing participation in Physical Activity in the community and has had a significant health and wellbeing impact on hard to reach groups.

Finalists: Brentwood Barbell Girls (Brentwood), Active Woman Southend (Southend), Essex Parkrun (Essex).

Young Sports Personality of the Year, sponsored by Writtle College

Criteria: An athlete who has made a significant impact the last year at a regional, national or international level either individually or as part of a team.

Finalists: Laura Stephens (Colchester), Imogen Newby (Braintree), Joshua Newman (Basildon).

Disabled Sports Personality of the Year, Sponsored by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority

Criteria: An athlete who has made a significant impact in the last year at a national or international level either individually or as part of a team. Open to all ages and disabilities.

Finalists: Daniel McGauley (Colchester), Suzanne Warren (Colchester), Richard Chiassaro (Harlow).

Services to Disability Sport, sponsored by Superfast Essex

Criteria: An individual or an organisation that has made a significant contribution in the last year to advancing sport for people with disabilities.

Finalists: Brentwood Leisure Trust (Brentwood), Sport for Confidence (Basildon), Suzanne Warren (Colchester).

Changing Lives through Sport and Physical Activity, sponsored by Premier Education Group

Criteria: An organisation, group or individual that has made a significant contribution to develop a project using sport and physical activity as a tool to promote stronger, safer communities, improve health and well-being and to create social action through learning and volunteering.

Finalists: Trailnet (Brentwood), Paringdon Sports & Social Club (Harlow), TruEdge Fitness (Rochford).

Unsung Hero, sponsored by MRL Productions

Criteria: A volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to local sport. This could be a dedicated volunteer within a sports club setting who you feel deserves recognition for their commitment to supporting and developing the club and its members.

Finalists: Lenna Rayner (Braintree), Alex Felming (Harlow), Faye Trigg (Colchester).

Sports Personality of the Year, sponsored by Colchester United FC

Criteria: An athlete who has made a significant impact in the last year at a national or international level either individually or as part of a team.

Finalists: Saskia Clark (Colchester), Brinn Bevan (Basildon), Steve Mitchinson (Harlow)
