Halfon sets record straight on Junior Doctor contracts

HARLOW MP Robert Halfon has set the record straight over his stance on Junior Doctor Contracts.

He said: “I have huge respect for Harlow GPs doctors and consultants. I have seen for myself the enormous amount of hard work junior doctors do at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The manifesto commitment at GE15 was to introduce a 7 day NHS and this has already started in Harlow with weekend GP services and currently, there are five participating practices in Harlow who are taking bookings for the service which is based at a local health centre.

Comparing Sunday to Wednesday admissions, it shows that people are 15% more likely to die in our hospitals and that there is 3 times less cover than in weekdays.

In terms of the Junior Doctors’ Contracts, the Government said they are increasing basic pay by 11%; they are also cutting hours from 91 to 72 hours and introducing a 5 days working week.

I fought hard to get NHS investment in Harlow. Since 2010, the National Health Service has seen an extra £12.7 billion put into its budget, which has already provided a number of improvements at Princess Alexandra Hospital. These include a £1 million upgrade to its eye clinic, a new kidney dialysis unit, a new children’s Accident & Emergency centre, an upgraded maternity unit and a new Short Stay Assessment centre.

Today I am attending a meeting with the Department of Health to discuss support for Princess Alexandra Hospital and I am proud that the Government is investing in our NHS. Only yesterday the Chancellor announced £10 billion extra for the NHS with a £6 billion upfront.

The Government investment in the NHS has meant that the amount of doctors has increased by 2,500 and that there are 3,200 more nurses since July 2014.
