OFSTED Annual Report reveals thousands more Essex pupils now attend good or outstanding schools

Essex County Council is congratulating Essex schools after Ofsted’s Annual Report showed more than 18,000 extra pupils are attending good or outstanding schools than last year.

According to today’s report, which is based on inspection data up to the end of August, 70,819 Essex pupils (86 per cent) attend secondary schools rated as good or outstanding by Ofsted – up from 60,983 (74 per cent) in 2014.

Similarly, 86,448 pupils (82 per cent) attend primary schools with one of the top Ofsted ratings – up from 78,270 (73 per cent) last year.

The findings mean Essex is 42nd (secondary schools) and 104th (primary schools) in the local authority rankings.

Maltings Academy in Witham, Beauchamps High School in Wickford and Harlow College are identified within the report as examples of good practice.

Cllr Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “We have some fantastic schools in Essex and I would once again like to congratulate staff, governors and pupils on the remarkable improvements that have been made over the last year.

“As a council we are committed to working with schools to ensure pupils receive the best possible education and I am delighted with the progress being made.

“It is important that we maintain this positive momentum and schools continue to strive to be the very best they can be.”

Among the council’s efforts to ensure standards continue to improve is its championing of the school-led improvement model.

Such has been the success of the innovative model in Basildon that similar partnerships are now in place elsewhere in the county and more are being formed.

It is hoped that by summer 2018 all Essex schools will belong to a cluster.
