Long-serving foster carers retire after 49 years and over 500 children

Communities / Wed 2nd Dec 2015 at 04:07pm

THEY’VE given over 500 children a home but now Essex’s longest serving foster carers Maureen and Jeff Cushing have taken the difficult decision to retire. The couple, who live in Harlow, have fostered for 49 years caring for a wide range of children including sibling groups, teenagers, young mums with babies and more recently children seeking asylum. Maureen and Jeff have continued to foster even throughout their own health issues in order to provide a stable home for the young people in their care.

Councillor Dick Madden, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children said: “Maureen and Jeff are both outstanding people and foster carers. Their care and dedication has helped to improve the lives of hundreds of children. We wish them all the best with this next stage of their lives but they will be hugely missed!”

To mark the occasion a special presentation has been organised.
