Pupil-run youth club up and running at Passmores

SELFLESS teenagers in Harlow are giving back to their school community after taking the reins of a new pupil-led youth club.

The club, opened earlier this year, was initially run by adult volunteers while the young people were trained by Essex County Council’s Youth Service.

After two months of training, the team of hardworking pupils are now playing an active role in running youth activities for their peers.

The club takes place every Monday evening (4.30pm – 6pm) during term time.

The idea was first raised by Harlow Youth Matters – a group formed last year to look at how new youth activities could be delivered in the town.

Cllr Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “It is fantastic to see young people giving up their own time to benefit fellow pupils.

“Supporting and empowering communities to deliver tailored youth activities is something we have been championing for some time now, and with significant success.

“I am confident this new peer-led approach will be equally effective and would encourage any other schools interested in accessing training and support to set up similar youth clubs to get in touch.”

Vic Goddard, principal at Passmores Academy, said: “One of our core values is ‘social responsibility’ and this project is that value made to come to life.

“To see our young people taking control of the perennial problem of feeling they have nowhere to go is great. Too often young people are portrayed as being ‘takers’ from our community but I am delighted to see our students have decided to do something about it and to give back to younger students a safe and fun place to be.

“Exam results remain important of course but creating well-rounded and nice people is too.”

Essex County Council’s Youth Service and Harlow Youth Matters are also supporting the ongoing consultation over plans for new youth activities at Harlow’s Blackbush Springs Common Room, which is currently being refurbished.
