Fire Service consultation on cuts begins today.

A consultation which gives residents the chance to have their say on the future shape of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service begins today (Monday 1 February 2016).

Over the last decade the Service has seen the number of incidents it attends reduce by around half. At the same time, the Service has increased its work on preventing fires and emergencies in the first place and protecting people and businesses if they do occur.

The consultation, which runs for 12 weeks, sets out three options for change. These options prepare our Service for a future with reductions in incidents, an increased focus on prevention and a commitment to become financially sustainable as reductions in funding continue every year to 2020.

All of the options have a number of common factors including £3 million of extra investment in prevention and protection, additional savings of over £2m from support functions and no fire station closures.

Acting Chief Fire Officer Adam Eckley said: “This consultation will shape the future role of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service as we prepare for the future. These options ensure we continue to reduce risk, prevent injury and save lives across the County.

“There is now a 12 week window for everyone in the Essex, Southend and Thurrock to have their say on our plans and let us know what they think. I would encourage everyone to get involved and make their voice heard.”

There will also be a series of events held at libraries across the County, including Southend and Thurrock, where people will be able to talk to Service managers about changes and options proposed in their local area, as well as fill out the survey.
