Hockey: Harlow go down fighting against classy Southend

HARLOW travelled to Southend on one of the coldest game days of the year. On Valentine’s weekend they scored more than Aston Villa and had a similar ratio of shots to goals as the Manchester United team of the early season but could do nothing to prevent the defeat by a team surely destined to be playing in a higher league next season.
It seems ironic to suggest that a team that lost 10-2 defended well but it was true and in reality without the heroics of joint players of the match Laura Hay in goal and Bethan Spencer at left back it could have been a lot more. Spencer was tasked with containing Southend and Benfleets star player and for the first half had her under wraps. Sadly that didn’t stop others scoring at will. Her second half performance against tiring legs was unstoppable.
Goal saving challenges were made time and again by Sam Care, Anita Shearman assisted by Anna Ferdinando and Kelly Ball. On a positive note Liz Green scored and set up Tani Naidoo in the first half and her deadly accuracy in front of goal is possibly the missing link Harlow need to win against most other sides in the division.
