The Little Mermaid at the Harlow Playhouse

THE challenge that Wicked Productions have in Harlow is that they have set the bar very high.

Production after production has been excellent and so our seasoned reporter and grand-daughter went to the Harlow Playhouse on Saturday afternoon with high expectations.

The Little Mermaid told the story of one mermaid’s quest to find love and legs.

First things first, and once gain, we must praise Tom Swift, who is such a talented foil in both Christmas and Easter shows.

It is clear that he writes a cracking script that gets the balance right for adults and children. Once again, his natural ability to interact with cast and audience is hilarious and once again, this reviewer, just does not know if it is ad-libbed or embedded in the script.

The scenery was stunning and really made you feel as if you were underwater. Just like the pantomimes at Harlow Playhouse, production values are very important and the audience, who are paying good money, appreciate that the show has also given them a quality product.

The songs were very well presented and professionally sung. They may not have been household numbers but that did not stop the audience getting up and joining in. But this was also very well acted with Lenor, Morgana and cast getting everyone involved as the story unfolded.

One of the best recurring themes was the “copyright” jokes which Tom did with that cheeky way he has made his own.

But most of all it was a laugh. Whether it was squirting squids, the posters routine, the King’s “X Factor voice” or just the feel good atmosphere that Wicked Productions have nurtured at their shows, you had a smile on your face throughout the whole show.

It was also good to see the cast out front at the beginning and the end, having their photographs taken with children who had clearly loved the performance of The Little Mermaid.

Go see this show while it is still on. The Little Mermaid makes a big splash.
