HARLOW MP Robert Halfon has responded to pleas from parents who are unhappy about plans to turn the school into an academy.

Mr Halfon has written to the Academies Commissioner and asked a number of questions.

Mr Halfon told the Commissioner: “I have been contacted by the parent of a child at Jerounds Community Primary School in Harlow.

With over 500 people having now signed a petition against the proposed sponsorship of the school by a multi-academy trust (following the outcome of an Ofsted inspection), I am concerned about the strength of feeling this process has invoked and the worry this is causing many parents.

The parents have many questions too, not least why one specific trust was chosen over another. The transparency of this process appears to be of particular concern.

The school’s latest results were very good, and although safe guarding record keeping (a serious issue, I acknowledge) was identified in the Ofsted report as an issue, parents have told me that they were very happy with their child’s progress. Parents have also told me that such a major upheaval for a generally well performing school, is not warranted but that if the academy was necessary then parents should be able to examine the plans put forward by the different trusts.

I hope that you are able to provide the information the parents require but can I suggest that you meet with a representative group to alleviate their concerns?

I have also been asked to contact OFSTED about the report itself and this I shall do.

I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.
