AN off-duty Special Constable has been praised after his quick actions following a shoplifting incident in Harlow.

Special Constable Dan Schuster was off-duty and doing some shopping in B&Q in Howard Way just before 10:00am on Monday, 30 October, when he spotted staff outside the shop struggling to restrain a man who they suspected of shoplifting.

Following a foot chase, Dan quickly apprehended a man and interviewed him at the scene.

A 31-year-old man from London was reported for the offence. The items were recovered.

Special Inspector Martin East said: “I would like to commend Sc Schuster for his quick actions and courage. It shows that even when off duty, our officers are prepared to tackle crime whenever they see it.”

Special Constable Dan Schuster fits his duties around a busy career in construction.

Special Constables have full police powers, uniforms and equipment but sacrifice their free time on a voluntary basis, organising their busy personal lives, day jobs and other commitments around police duties.
