Stewards Gothic

HALLOWEEN was somewhat extended at Stewards Academy, as both staff and students took part in activities that were decidedly gothic in nature for the first Reading Week of the school year.

To promote this gothic extravaganza the English Department staff dressed up as gothic literary characters throughout the week. Students were invited to ghostly library readings and also had the chance to enter a gothic short story competition.

This was judged by Mrs R O’Grady, Stewards English KS3 Lead with Responsibility for Literacy. The overall winner of the competition was deemed to be the very talented Katie Swallow in year 8. Katie received the much coveted Top of the Lunch Queue Pass for her efforts. Runners-up were James Read, Year 7; Mia Todd, year 8, and Bryony Witt-Davies, year 8.

Mrs O’Grady said: “The event is of huge value to students who get to showcase their creative writing skills in a different forum. Students and staff also have a chance to Drop Everything and Read daily; this really helps to promote the importance of reading for pleasure.”
