HARLOW athletes were out at a range of events this weekend, including cross country, hill running and indoor competition.

The weekend began on Saturday morning with the Essex Cross Country League. It was a disappointing morning in terms of numbers participating, but those that did compete did well.

Only two U13 boys competed and their points tally managed to pick up tenth place from thirteen teams between them. Jack Rushworth had run before but James Malyon was making his club debut. Jack was 24th in the 3.1k race, in a time of 14.01 minutes and James was 43rd in 17.45 minutes.

There was only one girl’s team and they were the U15 girls. Maddie Piron was the highest placed finisher in 18.32, she was seventeenth for the 4k distance. Next was Grace Malcolm in 24th position and her time was 19.04 minutes. Mairi Malcolm was 35th in 24.30 minutes. Their combined score was enough for sixth place, out of ten teams, overall.

After four rounds the U13 girls have dropped to tenth from sixth place, the boys in the same age group remain in tenth place from thirteen. The Under 15 Girls are still in seventh place with the boys in thirteenth.

Meanwhile, Dawn Jones travelled up to Holyhead to take part in the Holyhead Mountain Run. She won the women’s race outright and also the V45 age group title in the process. She completed the gruelling 11k course, with 440m of ascent and descent in 1 hour and 3 minutes.

On Sunday, Beth Harryman was the club’s only competitor at the Southern Indoor Championships for Seniors and Under 20s. Following her strong performance in the National Combined Events Championships last weekend, she elected to compete only in the U20 Long Jump. She finished sixth overall with a very impressive jump of 5.23m.

The weekend ended with further good news that following the end of the Sports Hall Athletics season, Harlow athletes Sophie Bridle and Millie Upton have been selected for Essex for the forthcoming regional rounds. Sophie will be running the 4 Lap Race and Millie will be representing the county in the Standing Long Jump. The regional round takes place at Hatfield Sports Village in February.
