A NEW school choir is already getting snapped up to perform at various events in its first few weeks.

Cooks Spinney Primary Academy, in Harlow, launched its Voices of the Future choir just last month and the requests for appearances are already mounting.

As a result, they are now booked to entertain residents at Wrights Court Retirement Facility, in Potter Street, as well as taking part in the Sounds of Essex Festival where schools from across Essex will join together to perform around the theme of Friendship.

Pupils are now eagerly rehearsing Lean on Me, I’ll Be There and You’ve Got a Friend for the collaborative Charanga Massed Choir performance at Central Park, in Chelmsford.

A day of rehearsals and workshops has been held at Cooks Spinney ahead of their first major event.

Year 4 teacher Tracy Pope, who is co-ordinating the choir, is overwhelmed at the response to the choir’s launch.

She said: “The children are buzzing! They are so excited.

“When I set the choir up, I thought it would be a really good club where children would be able to express themselves and sing each week in assembly. I had never imaged these opportunities would be out there waiting for us. There is a whole bunch of people out there who want to get children expressing themselves through music in a big way. We are getting opportunities to take this outside of school and to collaborate with others.

“That is just amazing and provides yet more experiences for our children which will become stand-out memories of their primary school days.

“I can see the choir going from strength to strength.”

The choir will also perform at the school’s summer fete in July and has signed up to be a part of Student Voices to perform at the O2 on January 31.

Head of school Neil Stirrat said: “We love giving back to our community and our choir is another great way to do this. Being invited to the local care home is an excellent opportunity. We get to entertain the residents and hopefully brighten their day, while our pupils learn about their community and get to showcase the vocal talents they’ve been practising.”
