Passmores Academy Community Day

ONE thousand students and staff members from Passmores Academy poured their energy and enthusiasm into helping others, when they took part in Passmores’ annual Community Day recently.

Despite the sweltering heat, the young people, who are all aged between 11 and 15, got fully involved with putting others before themselves and making a positive difference to the Harlow community.

Over forty different activities had been organised, with students and school staff working in various locations across the town. They helped to clear areas for outdoor learning environments at local primary schools, packed bags for shoppers at ASDA supermarket, spent the day entertaining residents of various care homes and helped out with gardening, conservation and regeneration projects all over Harlow.

Passmores Principal, Vic Goddard said: ‘On a daily basis I get frustrated at the negative images which are portrayed about young people. Community Day is our chance to prove this wrong and is a great opportunity for our young people to work in teams and give back to their community’.

Since the event, the school has received many letters and phone calls of thanks, including one comment from staff and pupils of Tany’s Dell Primary School: ‘We can’t thank Passmores students and staff enough for all the hard work they put in to cleaning ‘Mysterious Hollows’. The area is almost ready for use to start developing our outdoor classroom – this has been a dream of ours for years. We would never have got this far without those guys’.

Events Manager, Lynn Guyton said: ‘We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from the community, and how much they are looking forward to our students returning next year. We’ve been running our Community Day programme for many years and now schools from across the country have been in contact with us asking how they can organise their own similar projects. This is a testament to how worthwhile this initiative is.’
