Come and celebrate Harlow parkrun 200

Athletics / Fri 17th Aug 2018 at 12:27pm

ON SATURDAY morning, the two hundredth running of the Harlow parkrun will take place.

The first Harlow parkrun took place on November 8th, 2014.

The first ever parkrun took place in 2004 in Bushey Park near Hampton Palace. It was just a way of a number of runners making sure they all got up to run a 5K every Saturday. Since then it has become and worldwide phenomena.

A number of Harlow running enthusiasts (Robin Lozeau, Catherine Penketh, Claire Pardoe, Vicky Calder) who had been running park runs in Waltham Abbey, Hatfield Forest and other areas, got together and with the help of Active Harlow’s Chris Purvis and Harlow Council’s late Darren Fazackerley launched the 5K run in the beautiful surroundings of Harlow Town Park.

The first run attached 154 runners however there were a number of parkrun tourists that day. The next week, 98 ran but over the month and years, the run has become increasingly popular and now regularly gets over 200 runners. The biggest attendance has been 252.

The whole ethos of the parkrun is to have fun and get round in your own way.

Or you can be really grumpy like your editor who ran in Harlow parkrun no 1 and tweeted this:

“Nov 1974..being passed as I run up pitch and putt hill which was then part of Burnt Mill X-C course.

“Nov 2014….nothing changes…..”
