Passmores Academy hold summer school for new students

Education: Secondary / Fri 31st Aug 2018 at 10:05am

Passmores Academy recently hosted its annual Summer School for the new Year 7 intake starting this September.

THE action-packed week of activities provided students with a taste of what their future lives at Passmores will be like. Importantly, it was a chance to get to know teachers and student prefects whilst making new friends in preparation for the sometimes daunting transition from primary to secondary school.

Although government funding for summer schools was withdrawn in 2015, Passmores continues to self-fund the seven-day programme each year during the summer break. The event is open it to all students who will be joining the school in Year 7 at the start of the autumn term.

Almost two-hundred students took part and enjoyed curriculum-based pursuits designed to be both engaging and fun. Linked to the theme of the World Cup, activities had a strong emphasis on team-work, and promoted Co-operative Values such as equality, self-responsibility, social responsibility and caring for others, which the Passmores family of schools subscribe to.

The varied range of opportunities included an outdoor pursuits away-day and a light-hearted approach to maths, where the youngsters raced remote control cars to make calculations on speed, distance and time. The programme culminated in a celebration assembly attended by parents, staff and governors who packed the hall to watch students present their work in a range of imaginative ways.

Some students picked up awards for their outstanding efforts across the week. The appreciative audience responded with enthusiastic applause, signifying the end of another successful Summer School and the beginning of a new chapter in their children’s lives as part of the Passmores family.

Associate senior leadership team member, Abi Cunningham said: ‘Summer School is such a valuable part of our transition process as it helps alleviate any worries or concerns that might be felt by new students and their parents. Because of Summer School, we are confident that these young people will now begin Year 7 in September with new friends and a genuine enthusiasm for learning’.
