Abbotsweld students and parents enjoy SELF day

Education: Primary / Tue 30th Oct 2018 at 08:07am

ONCE again the children of Abbotsweld were treated to an extraordinary day at SELF launch 2018/2019.

The day began with parents meeting with Mrs Benson and Mrs Nee for a breakfast celebration of all the wonderful SELF activities that took place in the summer term and the focus for this year.

After breakfast the school was alive with parent workshops. From Smores, to flower arranging, fruit tasting and building boats there was something for everyone.

Parents kindly added their input on the day,
“Great to spend time in the classroom to find out all about SELF”
“A lovely morning, the tasks are fun and engaging and the children really enjoyed themselves. It is nice to have the opportunity to be more involved in my child’s learning”
“The activities were so creative, can’t wait for the next one”
“I really enjoyed being invited in to school. I enjoyed seeing the indoor and outdoor environment. Toasting marshmallows was fantastic”

The SELF programme has been a resounding success. It encompasses a wide variety of ideas that will support children in a variety of ways. These activities are pupil led and aim to help create well rounded future employees and citizens of Harlow and the world.

The four specialised areas are specifically designed to give the children maximum impact. Examples of some of these are: Social, saw quizzes and camp fires. Exposure, saw floristry and first aid. Life Skills saw sandwich making and gardening. Fascination, saw boat building and making slime.

The day’s subsequent activities did not disappoint. Reception children were fascinated with erupting volcanoes and across the school there were many different activities engaging young minds. A pupil voice session completed the day with lots of great feedback that will help shape the launch day next year.
