Primary school children return to cheer elderly patients at Christmas

A children’s choir was so popular when they sang at their local hospital last year that they were back by popular demand this year.

Pupils from Katharines Primary School brought Christmas cheer to elderly patients at Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAHT) in Harlow, when they came in to sing carols.

Christmas songs. Gibberd ward is a dedicated unit to provide special care for very frail patients and those living with dementia.

Seventeen youngsters aged seven to 11 were on hand with music teacher Emma Crossingham. The students from years four to six were certainly in fine voice. Emma said: “The children have done amazingly well, and have learnt a range of carols, with some new takes on old favourites, which went down well with our audience.”

Pupil Sophie Worsdell, aged 10, said: “It was nice to sing to those that were on the ward and watch beaming smiles form on their faces.”

Emily Prior, also aged 10, said: “It was a heartwarming experience. We could see that the patients were enjoying it and we also enjoyed it.”

Ward manager Michelle Ashman said: “Gibberd ward is a wonderful unit, providing the ideal environment for these elderly patients. They really benefited from the visit and the lovely carols.”
