Harlow Architectural Awards 2019: “What makes Harlow beautiful?”

Lifestyle / Thu 21st Mar 2019 at 11:21am

“What makes Harlow beautiful?”

For the fourth year, HADA will be asking Harlow residents to look around and nominate the most beautifully designed buildings they have seen built this year.

Organised by Harlow Civic Society, with the support of Places for People and Architecture & Design Services, the Harlow Architectural Design Awards celebrate the best designed buildings completed in the last year (July 2018- July 2019) with the aim of encouraging architects, developers and property owners to aspire to make Harlow an even better and more beautiful place in which to live. Winners will be presented with the prestigious Harlow Architectural Design trophies at a presentation ceremony in Autumn 2019

HOW TO NOMINATE A BUILDING YOU LOVE

We want you to nominate your favourite new architectural designs in three categories:

residential Residential projects can be any project relating to a home, be it a great looking new house – for example last year’s winner in Forebury Lane, Newhall or a stunning – or excellent extension – no matter how big or small the budget!

non-residential The non-residential category is wider and covers any project not relating to a home, perhaps a wonderful sports facility, a school, a restaurant or a garage – like last year’s winner, Gates Ford.

environmental

This year we are introducing the new environmental category in order to celebrate and conserve the open, green nature of Harlow’s design, and to highlight the importance of a sustainable and ecological response to climate change effects in towns and cities. We invite you to look around at projects where trees and shrubs have been planted, ponds and water have been restored and improved, green areas have been reinstated, or building developments which have thoughtfully used environmentally friendly features and materials. We also include in this category older buildings that have been ‘recycled’ i.e. have been regenerated or re-instated rather than demolished.

NOMINATIONS OPEN IN APRIL TO THE END OF JUNE

It is easy to make a nomination. Just go to www.harlowarchitecturaldesignawards.org.uk

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

In September, Harlow residents will be asked to vote on the ultimate winner from a shortlist of entries drawn up by our expert panel. The panel will also select the winner in each category based on residents’ voting results.

PRESENTATION OF AWARDS

At a special event, the winning buildings’ architects will be presented with our beautiful, custom-made glass trophies designed by local artists from Parndon Mill, Harlow’s creative hub. The owners/occupants of the buildings are given a commemorative plaque for display on their building.

Paul McLIntic, HADA Panel team member:

“These awards have brought attention back to the importance of Harlow’s design and the buildings on it. We are optimistic that the new environmental category will do the same for our green spaces and sustainability. There is no doubt that Harlow has a unique and valuable designed character and these Awards are all about enjoying it keeping it intact.”

Mary Parsons, Group Director of Placemaking and Regeneration at HADA sponsors Places for People:

“Places for People is very pleased to be involved again with the Harlow Architectural Design Awards. There are many exciting opportunities presented by the Harlow and Gilston Garden Town initiative and we look forward to helping shape the future in keeping with the best of the town’s heritage.”

Mark Cotton, Principal of Harlow’s leading architectural practice, Architecture & Design Services:

“Harlow’s unique design has had a big influence on architectural thinking and these Awards help to remind us just how special this contribution has been. We are once again looking to engage with residents in the appreciation and further development of our surroundings.”
