“Whilst she cannot change what has happened to her, she can try to change what happens for others”.
HARLOW MP Robert Halfon has called for an increase in the sentencing for attempted rape to life imprisonment in an impassioned speech in the House of Commons.
He made the speech after a constituent (who cannot be named for legal reasons) came to see him after she survived an attempt to rape her in the Water Gardens car park in May, 2018.
Film of the speech is below.
In the speech, Mr Halfon praises the bravery of his constituent, details the traumas she endured in taking the case to court including a particularly harrowing eight hours at the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC).
The government reponse was made by the Solicitor General, Lucy Frazer.
YH attended the meeting at the House of Commons. Afterwards, we spoke to Robert Halfon about what he hopes can be achieved by this campaign.
