Southern Counties Championships, Bedford Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 June
THREE athletes, Beth Harryman, Jamie Putt and Leo Chashchin, were scheduled to take part at the Southern Counties Championships, held at Bedford. Unfortunately, Beth Harryman had to withdraw prior to competition due to injury.
Jamie Putt was in action in the Under 20 800m. He came through a heat and a semi-final on Saturday to claim a place in the final on Sunday. The exertions proved too much for the final itself, in which he finished in eighth place. However, there was delight as he broke the two minute barrier in the semi-final. Breaking two minutes is a significant barrier in a middle-distance runner’s career and his new PB is now 1.59.4 minutes.
Leo Chashchin took part in the Under 20 Long Jump. In a solid series of jumps he made the final eight. And in a close competition ended the competition in fourth place, with a best jump of 6.68m.
Both young men are in good form and with three club matches and a number of individual events still to come, can look forward to more success before the season’s conclusion.
